The Evolution of Dispersal in Random Environments and The Principle of Partial Control

چکیده
McNamara and Dall (2011) identified novel relationships between the abundance of a species in different environments, the temporal properties of environmental change, and selection for or against dispersal. Here, the mathematics underlying these relationships in their two-environment model are investigated for arbitrary numbers of environments. The effect they described is quantified as the fitness-abundance covariance. The phase in the life cycle where the population is censused is crucial for the implications of the fitness-abundance covariance. These relationships are shown to connect to the population genetics literature on the Reduction Principle for the evolution of genetic systems and migration. Conditions that produce selection for increased unconditional dispersal are found to be new instances of departures from reduction described by the “Principle of Partial Control” proposed for the evolution of modifier genes. According to this principle, variation that only partially controls the processes that transform the transmitted information of organisms may be selected to increase these processes. Mathematical methods of Karlin, Friedland, and Elsner, Johnson, and Neumann, are central in generalizing the analysis. Analysis of the adaptive landscape of the model shows that the evolution of conditional dispersal is very sensitive to the spectrum of genetic variation the population is capable of producing, and suggests that empirical study of particular species will require an evaluation of its variational properties.

A PRELUDE TO THE THEORY OF RANDOM WALKS IN RANDOM ENVIRONMENTS
A random walk on a lattice is one of the most fundamental models in probability theory. When the random walk is inhomogenous and its inhomogeniety comes from an ergodic stationary process, the walk is called a random walk in a random environment (RWRE). The basic questions such as the law of large numbers (LLN), the central limit theorem (CLT), and the large deviation principle (LDP) are ...
متن کاملThe role of environments with extreme ecological conditions in the reductive evolutionary development processes of animal
Different groups of animals show phenotypic characters, which have been resulted by the reductive phenomena. The examples are the absence of pigmentation; dwindle of eyes in some cave-living animals, and also the absence of scale in some fishes. These characters are often leaded to evolution of new species with special adaptation that is so called "Regressive evolution". The reductive phenomena...
متن کاملEffect of random telegraph noise on entanglement and nonlocality of a qubit-qutrit system
We study the evolution of entanglement and nonlocality of a non-interacting qubit-qutrit system under the effect of random telegraph noise (RTN) in independent and common environments in Markovian and non-Markovian regimes. We investigate the dynamics of qubit-qutrit system for different initial states. These systems could be existed in far astronomical objects. A monotone decay of the nonlocalit...
متن کاملThe Principle of Partial Control in Reaction-diffusion Models for the Evolution of Dispersal
Studies using reaction-diffusion models for the evolution of dispersal have classified their behavior in terms of the categories of conditional vs. unconditional dispersal, and the operators of diffusion, nonlocal diffusion, advection, and spatial heterogeneity of growth rates. Recent results on resolvent positive operators reveal a different basis to classify their behavior: it focuses on the ...
متن کاملEvolution of Mixed Dispersal in Periodic Environments
Random dispersal describes the movement of organisms between adjacent spatial locations. However, the movement of some organisms such as seeds of plants can occur between non-adjacent spatial locations and is thus non-local. We propose to study a mixed dispersal strategy, which is a combination of random dispersal and non-local dispersal. More specifically, we assume that a fraction of individu...
